Press /News: Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o Spy Thriller ‘The 355’ Moves Back a Year

Variety — Universal’s “The 355,” a female-led heist thriller starring Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o and Diane Kruger, has pushed its release date back a year.

The movie was initially set to open in theaters on Jan. 15, 2021, and will now debut on Jan. 14, 2022.

Simon Kinberg directed “The 355” from a script he wrote with Theresa Rebeck. The globe-trotting espionage thriller follows a group of international spies — a brigade that also includes Penelope Cruz and Fan Bingbing — who team up to stop a potentially world-altering event. Together, the five women form a faction called “355,” a nod to the assembly of female spies that united during the American Revolution. Edgar Ramirez and Sebastian Stan round out the cast.

Universal Pictures nabbed “The 355” after it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. The studio reportedly paid more than $20 million for domestic distribution rights.

Like every Hollywood studio, Universal has been forced to shake up the release calendar numerous times during the pandemic. The studio recently moved “Fast & Furious” sequel “F9” to mid-2021, while “Jurassic World: Dominion” was postponed to June of 2022.

A majority of U.S. movie theaters have closed down again as attendance remains flat and coronavirus cases continue to surge. But thanks to a groundbreaking deal forged with major movie theater chains AMC and Regal, Universal is one of the few studios that has continued to release films in recent months. Among the studio’s titles still on schedule for 2020 are the animated sequel “The Croods: A New Age” on Thanksgiving and the Tom Hanks-led Western drama “News of the World” on Christmas Day.

Press/Video: All-Woman Spy Film ‘The 355’ Releases First Trailer

Variety

Universal Pictures’ “The 355,” a woman-led spy thriller starring Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing and Penelope Cruz, has released a first trailer for the film, which is set for a theatrical release on Jan. 15, 2021.

The movie follows a team of spies from various international agencies who must band together to prevent brewing conflicts and halt an incident that could send shockwaves through the world. The women put aside rivalries and distrust to form a faction, code-named “355” after the first woman spy in the American Revolution. Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramírez also co-star.

The film’s Twitter account teased the trailer’s release with posters of each of the leads, with Chastain playing Mace, Nyong’o as Khadijah, Cruz as Graciela, Kruger as Marie and Fan as Lin Mi Sheng. The women hail from the United States, United Kingdom, Colombia, Germany and China, respectively. Following the release of the posters, some fans expressed dismay at Cruz’s represented nation, as the actor is of Spanish not Colombian descent.

Simon Kinberg will direct the film from a script he co-wrote with Theresa Rebeck. Chastain and Kelly Carmichael will serve as producers for the actor’s Freckle Films, along with Kinberg for his Genre Films. Richard Hewitt (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Theory of Everything”) is set to executive produce.

Chastain first proposed the idea for a woman-led spy film while working with Kinberg on “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” The cast came together two years ago with CAA Film Finance brokering the deal and Film Nation handling international sales.

The high-profile film previously hit a snag in 2018 when Fan was accused of tax evasion and disappeared for months. After admitting to the charges and paying more than $100 million in fines, back taxes, interest and late payment fees, she emerged from hiding and returned to the project, which will mark her first role since the scandal.

Universal’s Spy Thriller ‘355’ Gets 2021 Release Date

Deadline.com — Universal has set a January 15, 2021 release date for 355, the ensemble spy thriller that came together during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The pic directed and co-written by Simon Kinberg stars Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Fan Bingbing.

The hope is to launch a franchise based on an idea by Chastain of a Bourne Identity-like thriller revolving around female spies from agencies around the world. The women must bond together, overcoming their suspicions and conflicts, to use all their considerable talents and training to stop an event from occurring that could thrust our teetering world into total chaos. Along the way, these strangers and enemies become comrades and friends, and a new faction is formed and code-named “355” (a name they adopt from the first female spy in the American Revolution).

Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez are also in the cast and the pic began production in early July with shoots in Paris, London and Morocco.

Kinberg co-wrote the script with Theresa Rebeck, and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael are producing via Chastain’s Freckle Films with Kinberg via his Genre Films. Richard Hewitt is executive producer.

In a unique arrangement, the actresses and filmmakers are understood to have equity stakes in the movie, which was a magnet for distributors worldwide in Cannes. Its strong components, novel approach and female empowerment messaging combined to make it the right package at the right time.

Universal had previously set aside the January 2021 date for an event film. So far, the release schedule is thin at that time, with only a Universal-Blumhouse movie and Paramount’s Rugrats staking out dates that month.

Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez Join Spy Thriller ‘355’

HollywoodReporter.com — Marion Cotillard, who was part of the film’s splashy market presentation last year, has since dropped out.
355 is back on track.

The film — which marked last year’s biggest sale at the Cannes market but hit a roadblock when one of its stars, Fan Bingbing, became embroiled in a tax evasion scandal in her native China — has filled out its cast with Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez.

The duo join Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz and Fan in the action pic about a group of female spies who must bond together to stop an event from occurring that could thrust the world into total chaos. They form a faction code-named 355, a shout-out to the first female spy in the American Revolution.

Marion Cotillard, who was part of the Cannes presentation last year as one of the film’s stars, has since dropped out, citing personal reasons.

The film, which was acquired by Universal and will be directed by Simon Kinberg, is set to begin principal photography in Paris in July. Shooting also will take place in London and Morocco.

Chastain is producing through her Freckle Films banner alongside Kelly Carmichael and Kinberg. Theresa Rebeck, whose credits include NBC’s Smash, wrote the screenplay.

Stan is currently onscreen in Avengers: Endgame and recently appeared in I Tonya. He is repped by ICM and Brookside Artist Management.
