Fall film festival season beckons, and cinema fans are about to begin feeling that sentiment in the coming days, as the Toronto International Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival are all readying to announce new additions to their respective lineups this week and next.

First out of the gate: TIFF has today announced its Gala and Special Presentations slates, arguably the starriest offerings of a festival known for bringing out the big guns. This year’s Gala and Special Presentations feature films from nearly 30 countries, including new films from Pedro Almodóvar, Danny Boyle, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Lee Chang-dong, Jesse Eisenberg, Gael García Bernal, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Mike Leigh, John Madden, Rachel Morrison, Cristian Mungiu, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Mina Shum, and Florian Zeller.

The lineup also includes a hefty number of hits from Cannes, including Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord,” plus other hits like Jordan Firstman’s “Club Kid,” Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur,” Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s “La Bola Negra,” Marie Kreutzer’s “Gentle Monster,” and more. Two of our Sundance favorites, Beth de Araújo’s “Josephine” and Noah Segan’s “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York,” are here, as are new picks from perennial performers, like Ira Sachs, Andrew Haigh, and Lukas Dhont. And Venice opener “Ink,” from Danny Boyle, will make its way from Italy to Canada after its debut there.
