Sebastian Stops by Good Morning America (Photos + Video)

Screenrant.com Avengers: Infinity War star Sebastian Stan appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, and posted a photo from the show’s set of himself posing with a toy replica of the Infinity Gauntlet. The appearance was to promote Avengers: Infinity War and a new children’s charity initiative called Marvel: Universe Unites.

Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes aka. the Winter Soldier, posted a video on Instagram of him flexing a toy version of the Infinity Gauntlet – one of the key artifacts wielded by the cosmic villain Thanos in Infinity War. Stan appeared on GMA alongside Paul Bettany, who plays The Vision (and formerly voiced Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S.), and Karen Gillan, the reformed villain Nebula from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies (who will also be appearing in Infinity War). The upcoming Infinity War will be the first of a two-part movie that will end this current generation of Marvel movies and transition into a new phase with emphasis on new or currently supporting characters.

The Good Morning America appearance, and the accompanying Instagram, was to begin the push for Marvel: Universe Unites. This is a charitable drive co-branded to help promote Infinity War (as the existing Marvel universe will unite in the film). It is part of a larger charitable initiative called Hero Acts that works to support the Save the Children charity.

APRIL 27th. #infinitywar #? #GMA #heroacts

A post shared by Sebastian Stan (@imsebastianstan) on

The video came with a flurry of social media activity that also included a photo of the three actors posing with a bevy of Marvel toys. The concept between Universe Unites is that each Marvel actor would play with the toys given to them in a large box, and pose with them for social media photos. The toys would then be sent to a child in need. The photo of Bettany, Gillan, and Stan aims to reach one million likes on Instagram. If the photo hits the desired number, Marvel will donate $250,000 to the charity. Marvel will also be donating 10 percent of Marvel toy sales proceeds earned on Saturday, March 3.

The character of Barnes is notably outfitted with a cybernetic arm after losing his left arm in an accident during World War II that presumably had taken his life. He was last onscreen missing the arm completely. It is notable, then, that Stan is the one posing with the Gauntlet. In the comics, the Winter Soldier eventually takes up the mantle of Captain America when Steve Rogers is apparently assassinated. It has been theorized that part of the Marvel push past Infinity War will be to feature Barnes as the new Captain America, and it is possible that Barnes unleashing the power of the Infinity Gauntlet may play into this somewhat.

Seldom is anything done in the public sphere by a Marvel Cinematic Universe actor without some sort of subtext or cryptic hinting. Marvel is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to future movie events and the trajectory of the MCU storyline. It is unlikely, then, that the post by Stan on the show was merely a fun bit of happenstance. It is possible, though, that we will have to wait past Infinity War for the meaning of the act, as the currently untitled fourth Avengers movie will continue the story from May’s Avengers romp.

Cinema Blend: The ‘I, Tonya’ Moment That Sebastian Stan Was Surprised To Learn Was Actually Real

CinemaBlend.com — Director Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya is very upfront about the weird and contradictory nature of the true story behind its narrative — but it also features no shortage of “stranger than fiction” moments. There is not only a lot that is verifiable truth in the film, but a lot of that same material is also batshit insane. One perfect example is a scene where Jeff Gillooly drives for hours just to hurl an insult at Tonya — which was a sequence that actor Sebastian Stan couldn’t believe actually happened when he first read the script. He recently told me,

I had a lot of moments where I was really blown away by some of the scenes, because I just thought, ‘It’s just kind of ridiculous.’ I didn’t understand how anybody could be capable of doing those things — particularly the scene where Jeff and Tonya are on the phone, and they’re fighting, and she’s eight hours away in a different place. And he winds up driving eight hours just to say, ‘Fuck you!’ to her.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sebastian Stan earlier this month during the Los Angeles press day for I, Tonya, and had the chance to pick his brain a bit about the true story that inspired the movie. I specifically asked if there were any scenes he couldn’t believe were really real when he was preparing to play the infamous Jeff Gillolly, and he selected what is certainly one hell of a weird moment from the film.

In the comedy/drama, Jeff (Sebastian Stan) and Tonya (Margot Robbie) have a volatile relationship that often leads to messy fights, and at one point they decide to break up. Jeff, staying with his friend Shawn (Paul Walter Hauser), tries to call her and patch things up, but every time he does he gets a quick, “Fuck you,” and she hangs up. Despite the fact that she is in a training facility eight hours away, he gets in the car with Sean, drives, and then gets satisfaction when he screams at her from a balcony, ‘No, fuck you!” It’s a very strange sequence, but apparently entirely real.

Sebastian Stan sees the humor of the scene as part of the genius of the I, Tonyascript — a great example of the very strange sense of humor. There is a great deal in the story that really isn’t funny (there is a lot of horrible physical and emotional abuse featured), but at the same time you really can’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of some of it. Said Stan,

But that was the irony of this script that was really interesting, just balancing the humor and then also tragedy, and also that there was so much sadness in these characters that were to some extent also funny.

Mark Hamill Keen to Work with ‘Son’ Sebastian Stan

Mark Hamill wants to find a project for himself and fellow actor Sebastian Stan to portray father and son, because the Captain America: Civil War star looks just like his younger self.

The Star Wars veteran has been inundated with Twitter messages from fans online for some time, with many wondering if the two are actually related after noticing the striking similarities between 35-year-old Stan and Hamill during his days as a young actor.

Some have even shared side-by-side images of the pair to prove their theory, and in September (17), Hamill finally acknowledged the remarks by reposting one of the photo comparisons and making reference to a famous Darth Vader quote from Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

“Sorry to disappoint you but I refuse to say ‘Sebastian Stan-I AM YOUR FATHER!’ (even though, in fact, I am),” he quipped, adding an emoji of a winking face with a tongue sticking out. He then shared the hashtags, “#SorryNotSorry #MySonSebastian”.

Hamill has since revealed fans are encouraging him to recommend Stan play a younger version of his Star Wars character Luke Skywalker when Disney bosses start the casting process for the proposed spin-off movie, but he doesn’t want to interfere with the process.

“At first, I said, ‘He’s way too handsome to be compared to me!,” Hamill told Good Morning America of the initial comparisons. “And then they (fans) morphed (pictures of) us together and I thought, ‘Ooh, that is kind of spooky.’ People say, ‘Would you support him (Stan) to be the young Luke Skywalker when they make those movies?’, and I thought, he doesn’t need me. He’s an accomplished enough actor to get it (the role) on his own, and I shouldn’t put my thumb on the scale because it’s not my choice, it’s Disneyand LucasFilm, and I don’t wanna cut short any other potential Lukes.”

Instead, the 66-year-old is keen to work with Stan on a new film – they just have to find one first.
“He’s a wonderful actor,” Hamill smiled. “I’d love to work with him. Heck, I’d play his father any day!”

During Hamill’s GMA appearance on Thursday (30Nov17), he was surprised with a funny video message from Stan, who got in on the joke following his interview on the same show on Wednesday (29Nov17).

“Dad, hey… I just want to let you know, I got orange juice and eggs and everything so when you get home tonight, you should be all good…”, Stan said in the video, much to Hamill’s amusement.

Stan has yet to respond to Hamill’s project proposal.

‘I, Tonya’ Gets 2017 Awards-Qualifying Release Date

The upstart distributor Neon will open the film in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 8, with a platform rollout continuing into January.
I, Tonya, Craig Gillespie’s hilarious and devastating Tonya Harding biopic, is officially joining the race to the 90th Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The film will open in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 8, with a platform rollout that will continue into January.

The film, which stars Margot Robbie (who also is one of its producers), had its world premiere on Sept. 8 at the Toronto International Film Festival, where, three days later, it became the fest’s highest-profile acquisition, selling to Tom Quinn and Tim League’s Neon for $5 million (over an even larger bid by Netflix).

After catching I, Tonya in Toronto, I wrote: “In the hands of a competent distributor, Robbie could well land a best actress nomination — she wouldn’t be the first beautiful actress to ‘de-glam’ and/or produce her own project and get recognized for doing so (see: Charlize Theron and 2003’s Monster). As for [Allison] Janney, she seems to me like a slam-dunk for a best supporting actress nom [for her portrayal of Harding’s mother] — which would be her first-ever Academy recognition, and hugely deserved.”

Neon & 30WEST Land ‘I, Tonya’ For $5 Million

After three all-night negotiations, Neon and 30WEST tag teamed to skate off with a deal for I, Tonya, the Craig Gillespie-directed black comedy from Miramax about the epic fall from grace of Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding. Sources peg the deal at around $5 million, and Neon’s Tom Quinn and Tim League will make a strong play for the film in Oscar season. The Steven Rogers-scripted film stars Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney, and came into the festival as the hottest acquisition title before it premiered Friday at 9:30 at the Princess of Wales Theatre. At a post premiere party at Ivan Reitman’s restaurant Montecito, potential buyers I spoke to were not disappointed, nor were reviewers. Robbie produced the film with Tom Ackerley, Rogers and Bryan Unkeless.

The bidding came down to the compelling choice of a traditional theatrical play (Neon) or a streaming deal (Netflix) and here the filmmakers and financiers chose the former. Beyond the strong performances by Robbie and Janney, I, Tonya has an enviable path in front of it. The film can qualify for awards, and roll out slowly with the Winter Olympics coming in February (where the Harding scandal played out in 1994) and then Oscars in March. Neon and 30WEST made a passionate pitch and this will be a big film for the upstart distributor.

In unabashed R-rated fashion, Gillespie admirably threaded the needle and balanced the sometimes outrageously funny chronicle of how Harding skated from a hardscrabble life into momentary glory followed by tabloid scandal, counterbalanced by the upsetting depiction of her being used as a punching bag by her dimwitted husband Jeff Gillooly, after she was slapped around repeatedly as a child by her tough as nails and impossible to please mother. The film shapes up as a cross between hallowed black comedies Fargo and To Die For, in characterizing the twisted things that can happen when not bright people have ambition and try to cut corners to achieve those dreams of escaping their low station in life.

In the lead up to the festival, CBS Films had made an offer said to be around $6 million, which was what Miramax Films paid earlier to acquire and make the film. Before others could step up, the sellers — CAA and UTA Independent Film Group co-brokered the deal for Miramax chief Bill Block — stuck a pin in any talks and let buyers see the film here in Toronto, or at simultaneous screenings in L.A. The clear goal was to match the film with the right distributor and put it into the upcoming awards season race. Some buyers I spoke with felt the movie could be tightened, and it seemed like Gillespie was happy with the cut audiences saw last night. Continue reading
